The right to keep and bear arms is a fundamental right expressively granted in the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution. This right has been further supported and upheld by the United States Supreme Court in numerous decisions.
The right of Americans to keep and bear arms is critical for several different, but interrelated reasons.
1. The most popular and widely cited defense of the 2nd Amendment is self-preservation. An individual has the right to use extreme measures to defend their life and the lives of those around them. There is absolutely no reasonable argument that invalidates this determination.
2. The right to defend your property is derived directly from the Deceleration of Independence. Land ownership and the protection of that right were important to the founding fathers. It is just as important to liberty-minded citizens today.
3. Taking up arms to ward off invaders both domestic and foreign is important to the full understanding of the 2nd Amendment. While it is true it was written before police forces, it still provides citizens the ability to support the community in times of tragedy and high need.
I do not see “arms” as unlimited access to firepower. The common citizen does not require a rocket launcher, land mines, artillery, or aircraft arsenals. Those who try to push the discussion into these extremes, or insinuate that is the intent of Americans who support this freedom, are missing the point of 2nd Amendment rights.
At the heart of liberty is a belief in what the founding fathers intended for Americans to be and become throughout the generations. The right to keep and bear arms was on the forefront of their minds as they crafted the Constitution and I intend to defend that right for all Americans.
